Competition Children's Daycare Kit of Parts, Frankfurt 2009
The city of Frankfurt am Main organized a limited competition for the construction of three children's day care centres which set as its goal the application of a kit of parts in order to unify the building's appearance and for reasons of cost reduction. Our entry recognized four significant dimensions of this task: 1 the urban situations 2 the slightly differing space programs 3 the serial reproducibility and combinability of elements: a kit of parts 4 the passive-house standard
1 The urban situations - In general, the buildings are located towards the northern edge of each site so that the external spaces can be as generous as possible. The building configurations are modulated in such a way that clear external spaces for playing, planting and movement are assigned.
2 Differing space programs - In order to obtain clear spatial structures and building configurations and in order to satisfy the slightly diffreing space programs, buffer zones are required that are merged into the plan in a self-evident way.
3 Kit of Parts - The system consists of a) spatial typological elements such as group areas and core areas (hall, stairway and multi-purpose room) b) individual spaces (4,5 x 6m grid) c) separate tectonic elements (sand-lime block walls, glue-laminated posts and beams)
4 Passive-house standard - Essentially the passive-house standard aims to achieve an annual energy consumption for space heating of 15kWh/m2.
